Romania first to introduce SMR technology in Europe

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Wednesday that Romania is the first country in Europe where the new American technology of small modular reactors (SMR) will be implemented.

„This selection was made because on the sidelines of the COP 26 meeting in Glasgow we had a meeting with Mr Kerry, the United States special presidential envoy for climate; meetings, contacts between ministries happened before as well, but then we decided together to go this way. Romania is the first country in Europe where the new American technology of small modular reactors will be implemented. The first step is already being taken, we are going towards a design, after which we will effectively implement these reactors. The location of the first reactor is already known. In addition to us having access to this technology and receiving such modular reactors, we will be in a position after a few years to produce new such reactors and make them available to other allies and partners. Certainly, if we do our job properly, we will become the first country in Europe to effectively implement such technology”, Iohannis said on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Madrid.

President Klaus Iohannis attended the summit June 29-30.

The White House reported on Sunday that the United States was committing 14 million US dollars toward a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to provide the basis for the deployment of a small modular reactor power plant in Romania.
