Romania posts almost 10,000 new Covid-19 cases, 130 deaths in a single day

Romania has added 9,937 new coronavirus cases in the past day and 130 patients succumbed to the virus as the rise in cases shows no sign of slowing.

The Strategic Communication Group said 1,048 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units.

Some 36,202 tests were conducted of which 26,7% were positive, a similar figure to the past six days.

The latest alarming figures come as ahead of new restrictions which include a curfew on retail activity and a ban on nighttime movement except for health reasons and work. Schools will move to distance learning starting Monday.

Bucharest posted 901 new cases, more than anywhere else. Prahova county where there are a number of tourist resorts reported 514 new cases, a rise of almost 5%. The  northwest Cluj region had 485 cases and the central Sibiu region had 472 new infections, almost 7% more of total cases than the previous day.

Authorities reported that 86 men and 44 women with the virus died in Romania in the past day of which three were in their 30s. Four were .in their 40s, 11 in their 50s, 38 in their 60s and the remainder were older than 70.

Eight did not have underlying health conditions such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

Since the pandemic reached Romania there have been 297,000 cases of which more then 201,000 SARS-CoV-2 patients have recovered.
