Romania posts new pandemic record of almost 20,000 cases

Romania posted nearly 20,000 new Covid-19 cases  on Friday, setting another new record for single-day infections.

Cases have shot up in recent weeks with the spread of the new ,ore contagious omicron variant.

But hospitalizations and deaths remain relatively low compared to the last wave which peaked in October.

There were 49 Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours, authorities said Friday.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 19,649 new cases in the past 24 hours, a rise of about 3% on Thursday, which also set a new record.

Some 82,000 tests were carried out in the past day.

Romania has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the European Union after Bulgaria. By Friday, just 41.16% of the population was fully immunized.

There is widespread distrust of authorities and disinformation about the vaccine.
