Romania reports 31 coronavirus fatalities in one day, highest death toll since April 26

Romanian authorities say 31 patients have died after catching the coronavirus in the last day, the highest number of deaths in a single day in more than ten weeks.

The Strategic Communication Group said that there was a total of 397 new cases reported in the last day, taking the total number of infections to 29,620 on Tuesday. Of those, nearly 22,000 have recovered.

After two days when fewer tests were conducted, authorities tested 11,855 people in the last 24 hours. Of those, 3.35% came out positive which is the lowest percentage since July 1.

The number of people hospitalized in intensive-care units rose to 231.

Deaths have been rising in recent weeks, although Tuesday’s figure was one of the highest ever. There were 31 deaths also recorded on May 1 and 6. Romania reported 33 deaths on April 26.

Some 1,799 people have succumbed to the virus since the pandemic began.

The number of cases has risen in recent weeks after Romania loosened lockdown rules. Testing has also been stepped up.

Over the weekend, police handed out fines after they did checks at tourist spots to catch Covid-19 rule breakers.

There was a steep increase last week in Covid-19 cases in some tourist destinations, and authorities said they focused on those spots
