Romania reports 755 new coronavirus cases and 43 deaths as indoor restaurants, cinemas get ready to reopen

Romania reported 755 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, and 43 deaths of people infected with the virus a day before the reopening of restaurants and cinemas.

The Strategic Communication Group said just 7,313 tests were carried out in the past day. Testing drops off during the weekend. Some 10.32% of those were confirmed to be infected.

The number of people in hospital with the disease was 7,477 and the number in intensive care units rose to 506, a record number of cases.  

The latest figures come a a day ahead of the reopening of restaurants with indoor seating, cinemas and theaters almost six months after they closed when the pandemic spread to the country.

Bucharest reported the most new cases on Monday, with 102 infections, followed by the northeastern county of Vaslui where there were 68 confirmed cases. Three counties didn’t report a single new case.

The country’s total number of confirmed infections now stands at 87,540. Some 3,621 people with the virus have died since the virus first surfaced in February.

The deaths of the past day were 29 men and 14 women. Five were in their 50s, 10 in their 60s, 18 in their 70s and ten were older than 80.

Three of them didn’t have any underlying health conditions such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

There are currently about 9,000 people diagnosed with the SARS CoV-2 self-isolating at home and 5,900 in institutionalized isolation.

Almost 33,000 are in quarantine after they came in close proximity to outbreaks of the virus.
