Romania on Tuesday reported an all time high of daily Covid-19 infections and the second-biggest number of deaths in a single day from the novel coronavirus.

The Strategic Communication Group said that 994 new cases had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, almost 100 more than the previous high.

Most new cases were in the capital, Bucharest, where 151 infections were reported.

Thirty-six patients succumbed to the virus, a figure second only to April 15 when 40 people died in a single day.

Some 17,204 tests were carried out, meaning that 5.78% of those were confirmed to have the virus, a drop in real terms since Monday.

The number of patients being treated in intensive care however rose to 297, another record.

Romania has now reported a total 39,133 cases and 2,074 deaths since the pandemic began.

Tuesday’s figures were published as a law came into effect to make Covid-19 patients remain in hospitals and allow the government to impose a lockdown in the case of outbreaks or quarantine arrivals from high-risk countries.

Due to a legislative void, some 1,087 patients who were diagnosed with SARS CoV-2 have voluntarily left hospital since July 2.

TTuesday’s figures showed surges in Vaslui county in far eastern Romania and Timis in the southwest due to outbreaks there. A spike continued in the southern counties of Arges and Prahova.

Meanwhile, the counties of Harghita in central Romania and Giurgiu which borders Bulgaria, didn’t report a single new case.

Some 24,454 people have recovered from the disease.

Since testing began, more than 984,000 tests have been carried out.
