Romania reports more than 1,100 new coronavirus cases, 41 deaths

Romania reported 1,136 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday and authorities said 41 people succumbed to the virus in the last day.

The Strategic Communication Group said 20,552  tests were carried out, of which 5.53% were confirmed to have the virus, a similar percentage to last week’s figures.

There are 460 patients currently receiving treatment in intensive care units, which is the lowest since August 9. Overall, there are 7,200 Covid-19 patients in hospital.

The cumulative number of cases surpassed 97,000 on Tuesday, of which more than 40,800 patients have recovered.

Cases in the Romanian capital surged to 257, about one-fourth of the total cases and  70 more cases than Monday. There were 63 new infections in Ilfov county which neighbors the capital.

Twenty-two men and 19 women with the virus died in the last 24 hours. One patient was in their30s, four were in their 40s, three were in their 50s, nine in their 60s and 24 were older than 70.

All patients had underlying health conditions which made them more vulnerable to the virus such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease or obesity.

There are currently 10,250 people in Romania who have the virus who are in self-isolation at home and 6,170 who are in institutionalized isolation.

More than 34,000 are in quarantine at home after they came into contact with people who have the virus.
