Romania reports nearly 1,300 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, pushing total over 50,000

Romania has reported more than 50,000 cases of the news coronavirus since the pandemic spread to the country, officials said Friday.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 1,295 new cases in the past 24 hours, one of the highest figures every reported in a single day, taking the total number of cases to 50,886.

It is the tenth day when there have been more than 1,000 cases. Authorities will make it compulsory to wear masks in crowded outdoor places in some regions and cities this weekend in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

Thirty-nine patients succumbed to the coronavirus in the past 24 hours. One was in their 39s, two were in their 40s and three were in their 50s. Everyone who died had underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, cancer or obesity.

Romania reported the highest number of Covid-19 deaths across the European Union for its population size from July 15-29, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said Wednesday. The report calculated coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people.

The number of patients being treated in intensive care units on Friday rose to 409, while about 7,500 people with the virus are hospitalized nationwide.

More than 22,700 tests were carried out nationwide, of which about 9,600 were in request.

Of the total cases, 27,007 patients have recovered. Some 1.2 million tests have been carried out so far.

There are 4,500 people who tested positive for the virus self-isolating at home and 4,530 in institutionalized isolation.

Some 18,525 people are in quarantine at home because they live or have traveled from an area where there has been an outbreak.
