Romania has reported 1,504 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, the highest number ever and the first time when cases have surpassed 1,500.
The Strategic Communication Group said 25,052 tests had been carried out, meaning that 6% of people tested had positive outcomes, higher than previous days.
There were 38 deaths, fewer than previous days. Twenty-two men and 16 women died, of which one was in their 30s, six were in their 50s and seven were in their 60s.
They all had underlying health conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease , cancer or diabetes, except for one person
There are 492 patients in intensive care, slightly lower than previous days, and about 7,300 Covid-19 patients in hospital.
Bucharest had 236 cases and the eastern county of Bacau had 84 cases. The Prahova valley region, which is a tourist hotspot had 87 new cases.
Cumulative cases have risen to 83,150 and the death toll stands at 3,459.
The previous highest number of daily cases was on Aug. 13, when there were 1,454 new infections.
There are 11,350 people with the virus who are in self-isolation at home and 5,654 Covid-19 patients in institutionalized isolation.
More than 36,700 people have recovered from the virus.
