Romania’s Army scrambled two jets Friday morning after radar systems detected drones had fallen in eastern Romania.
The air defense systems were put on alert, and two F-16 aircraft from the 86th Borcea Air Base were lifted for investigating and monitoring the airspace, the defense ministry said.
At 10.05 a.m., a warning message was issued to residents in the targeted area.
“From current information, it is possible that drone debris also fell in Romania, in the Chilia Veche area. Specialized teams are ready to intervene in the field to start a search operation,” the ministry said.
Russian attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube
Overnight, Russia attacked port infrastructure in the Odessa region on the border with Romania with drones, Odesa governor Oleg Kiper said.
In a message on Telegram, he said that a food warehouse was damaged and a fire broke out, which was quickly extinguished by the intervention teams. He did not identify which port in the Odessa region was targeted by the attack.
Romanian airspace has been breached by Russian drones more than a dozen times since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Romania’s border lies about 300 kilometers from Odessa.
