President Nicusor Dan on Monday congratulated the president-elect of Portugal, a moderate socialist Antonio Jose Seguro, expressing  confidence in ongoing cooperation and strengthening of friendship between the EU and NATO nations.

“Congratulations and best wishes to António José Martins Seguro for his recent election as the new president of the Portuguese Republic,” President Nicusor Dan wrote on the X network on Monday.

He expressed confidence that “the close friendship between Romania and Portugal, based on our cultural heritage, linguistic affinities and vibrant people-to-people ties will continue to strengthen to the benefit of our countries and people.”

I look forward to working together to advance our excellent cooperation,” the president said.

Moderate Socialist Antonio Jose Seguro, 63, won a landslide victory and a five-year term as Portugal’s president in the second round of Sunday’s election, defeating his far-right and anti-establishment rival Andre Ventura.

Seguro, who received the support of prominent conservatives after the first round amid concerns about what many see as Ventura’s populist and authoritarian tendencies, becomes the first socialist head of state in 20 years, succeeding Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a conservative, after two terms.

In his victory speech, he promised to be a demanding and vigilant president, but never a counter-power.

“I promised loyalty and institutional cooperation with the government, and I will keep my word. I will never be a counter-power, but I will be a president who is demanding when it comes to solutions and results,” said Seguro.
