Romanian youth wins EU Translators’ Prize

Romania’s winner of the „Juvenes Translatores” translation contest organized by the European Commission is David Nicolae Solga, a pupil of the George Moroianu High School in Sacele, Brasov county.

„The European Commission congratulates today, 9 February, the 27 winners of the 16 edition of its translation contest, Juvenes Translatores, designed to high school pupils aged 17. The winner from Romania, David Nicolae Solga is a pupil of the „George Moroianu” High School in Sacele, Brasov county and translated from English to Romanian”, states a press release.

This year, 2,883 participants tested their language skills by translating a text into and from any of the 24 official EU languages.

Out of the 552 language combinations available, the pupils from 681 schools used 141 combinations, including translating from Spanish to Slovenian and from Polish to Danish.

The translators of the European Commission selected 27 winners, each for every country of the EU, as well as a number of 287 pupils who were awarded special mentions for outstanding translations.

According to the quoted source, 14 of the translators who received special mentions are from Romania. The award ceremony of the 27 winners will take place on 31 March 2023, in Brussels.

The European Commission Directorate-General for Translation organizes the „Juvenes Translatores” contest every year, since 2007.

The „Juvenes Translatores” contest aims to promote the study of foreign languages in schools and give young people the opportunity to get an idea about the job of translator.
