Romania’s health minister says the coronavirus pandemic will peak in about two weeks as the number of COVID-19 cases rose to almost 5,500 on Friday, with 265 fresh cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Nelu Tataru said that the peak number of cases would come between 20-25 April, the week after Orthodox Easter.

“We will see fewer and fewer cases starting in mid-May, the beginning of June,” he said.

“This peak very much depends on our involvement, both us as the healthcare side, and also the general public respecting the (social distancing) rules,” he said, during a visit to a hospital in the northeastern city of Piatra Neamt.

The Strategic Communication Group said 265 people have died after catching the virus.

A total of 729 patients have recovered from the virus.

There are currently 183 patients being treated in intensive care.

There are 25,226 people in institutionalized quarantine, while 77,317 people are in isolation at home. Quarantine is considered a preventive measure for the highly contagious virus.

Almost 55,430 cases have been carried out so far.
