Romania’s inflation dips in November, as household energy subsidies kick in

Consumer prices remained steady in November while annual inflation dropped slightly to 7.8%, the statistics office said Tuesday.

The 0.1% dip from October came after the government introduced a ‘cap and subsidy’ mechanism for household electricity and natural gas prices.

Electricity fell by 12.2% from October which offset a 1.7% increase in fuel prices.

Gas however jumped 2.3% in the past month in spite of the household cap.

Soaring fuel prices which are one-fourth more than a year ago and a 23% spike in electricity, gas and  heating  have fueled inflation.

Energy prices have had a knock-on effect on food. Sugar and maize rose by at least 10% and cooking oils were 28% more expensive,

Romania’s central bank expects inflation to peak at 8.6% in 2022.

The temporary energy bill subsidies will be phased out at the end of the winter season.

Energy prices push Romania’s inflation to 5% in July
