Russian volcano explodes in furious outburst

A volcano in far-eastern Russia has erupted for the first time in over 500 years.

Experts say may be linked to last week’s massive earthquake.

The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka threw up an ash plume up six kilometres into the night sky.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is “in the Pacific Ring of Fire”.

Luckily, it was in an unpopulated area – nevertheless, those around the areas have been told to move away from seashores.

Just a few hours later, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitdude in Russia triggered tsunami warnings, after waves rose up three metres, in the Kuril Islands.

And one week before, a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit another remote area in Russia, reverberating as far as French Polynesia and Chile.

Aftershocks like this are certainly not unheard of when it comes to earthquakes.

But an eruption of Krasheninnikov is entirely unusual: the last known volcanic eruption was in the 15th century.
