Tennis legend Serena Williams husband Alexis Ohanian slams Romanian tennis boss as ‘racist’

Serena Williams’s husband, Alexis Ohanian has slammed former Romanian tennis player , Ion Tiriac as “sexist” and “racist” over comments he made about the tennis champion.

The owner of the Madrid Open, 81,told Romanian public television this week that the 39-year-old should retire “if she had a little decency.”

“At this age and the weight she is now, she does not move as easily as she did 15 years ago.”

Ms Williams has 23 grand slam titles, the last one won in 2017, and is currently ranked11 by ATP.

Her husband, the Reddit co-founder  initially fired back om Twitter saying: “Safe to say no one gives a damn what Ion Tiriac thinks.”

He then tweeted “2021 and no holding back when a racist/sexist clown with a platform comes for my family.”

It is not the first time Mr. Tiriac, who won one singles title, has made personal comments about Serena Williams and her place in the sport.

In 2018, he also mentioned her age and weight and said, “I would like to see something else, I would like to see a player like Steffi Graf.”

“I always say people are entitled to their opinion,” she said at the time. “Clearly there’s more to women’s tennis than me. There’s a lot more, but I’ll have words with him, believe me, I’ll have words with him. It’s an ignorant comment, and it’s a sexist comment, and maybe he’s an ignorant man.”

Alexis Ohanian, who married the tennis player in 2017, took a less diplomatic approach.

“Had to Google it… turns out my 3 year old has more Grand Slam victories than this (clown emojis).”
