Twenty-four tourists have been evacuated after flooding hit parts of central Romania, inundating farms and roads, authorities said.

Emergency officials plucked tourists who were trapped in the Bucegi mountains to safety on Sunday after storms raged across a swath of central Romania.

The „extreme weather” which started on Saturday evening tainted water pipes and contaminated water supplies in the resorts of Sinaia, Azuga and Busteni. Water company Hidro Prahova told residents not to drink water from the tap.

Floodwaters damaged a bridge and swamped roads in the county of Vrancea, local county chairman Catalin Toma said.

“At the moment, there is only pedestrian traffic near the bridge,” he said. “We are making every effort to pump the water out.”

He said 2,000 people had been affected by the floods.

The waters came from forests in neighboring Covasna. “The land is damaged and the speed of the water is deadly if we’re not careful.”

Torrential rain flooded 30 farms in three places in Brasov county on Sunday. At least one family was evacuated.

Dozens of firefighters and gendarmes were called to pump out water from residents’ homes and cellars, Agerpres news agency reported.

Water was half a meter high in some places in one area of Brasov.

Meteorologists said the weekend storms were the heaviest in the area this summer.
