U.S. reassures Romania of support amid concerns about Russia ‘aggression’ in region

The U.S. has reassured Romania of its support for Romania amid concerns about what it called Russian aggression in the Black Sea region.

The U.S deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu on Monday.

In the call she “reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Romania Strategic Partnership in addressing common threats and challenges, particularly in the face of Russian aggression on NATO’s eastern flank,” spokesperson Ned Price said.

Romania has been a member of the alliance since 2004 and hosts a number of NATO bases.

Ms Sherman praised Romania as “a stalwart NATO Ally. Both agreed to collaborate on Black Sea security issues and stand unified against Russian aggression.”

The officials reiterated their “unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

She also spoke to Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov on Monday to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the United States and Bulgaria.

Last week, Washington said it had put 8,500 U.S. troops on heightened alert for a possible deployment to Eastern Europe  as Russian troops mass on Ukraine’s border.
