U.S. Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalac has expressed unease about elections as the country went to the polls on Sunday amid a surge of support for far-right parties.

“Our hope is that … Romania’s strong track record as a reliable democratic partner in Europe and in the Euro-Atlantic community will not be tarnished,” the Ambassador said on Saturday in a message that reflects the concerns of many Western diplomats Universul.net has spoken to.

She also referred  to Calin  Georgescu, a pro-Russia hard-right relative unknown who shocked the political establishment by winning the first round of presidential elections and a controversial decision to recount first-round votes,  a first in Romania.

“In recent days, many Romanians have expressed concerns over the course of their national elections, including the surprising results of the first round of the presidential elections, reports of campaign violations on use of social media and lack of transparency in financing, and the decision to conduct a recount of those results.”

“The fundamental purpose of a free and fair election is to ensure that those who govern have a clear mandate from the people they represent. No decision made during this crucial period should limit the right of Romanians to vote freely nor further put at risk the credibility of the election process,” she said in her message.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken congratulated Romania on its National Day Sunday and thanked it for its role in NATO and aid to Ukraine.

“Romania’s commitment to security and democracy in Europe is an inspiration for all nations. The United States is proud to work with you as you modernize your military and contribute to strengthening NATO’s eastern flank,” he said in a message on Sunday.

“Romania’s support for Ukraine, including welcoming refugees and providing security assistance, has bolstered the cause of freedom in the face of Russia’s aggression. Your leadership in helping Ukrainian grain reach global markets has helped feed the world.”

The ties between our nations, built over decades, continue to prosper. We are pleased to expand our cooperation in energy transition and commend Romania’s commitment to increasing solar, wind and nuclear capacity and regional interconnectivity. …Business, educational and cultural exchanges underscore the depth of our longstanding friendship.
