A Wisconsin woman missing since 1962 has been found “alive and well” after her disappearance case was reviewed by police.
Audrey Backeberg disappeared from her home in Reedsburg when she was 20.
Now we know that she left of her own accord.
The truth is sad: she fled a violent husband who threatened to kill her.
She had filed a criminal complaint against her husband, who she had married at the age of 14.
She was last seen by the 14-year-old babysitter who had helped her run away, walking away from a bus stop in Indianapolis, where they parted.
This year, a comprehensive review of old case files was carried out.
The detective was able to piece things together with the help of ancestry.com, via Backeberg’s sister.
He spoke to her on the phone. She is said to have moved on with no regrets. Her relationship with her children, who she appeared not to have taken with her, suffered.
