After defeating the Democrats twice in 10 years to be elected to the White House, Donald Trump managed to give his deadly rivals two giant gifts in just two weeks.
This came right in the middle of the campaign for the congressional elections; and in a fantastically adversarial context, in which from one week to the next his popularity is eroding at breakneck speed.
“I don’t think about the economic situation of Americans, I don’t think about anyone,” the US president said in mid-May.
- “I don’t care about the midterm elections,” he now says, at the end of May.
Donald Trump was already suspected of not giving a hoot about the problems of his fellow Americans and to the challenges faced by his Republican colleagues – long before he publicly admitted to this (with an unprecedented lack of political modesty).
The suspicions had been based on Donald Trump’s own crazy decision to enter a war that bore terrible military and economic costs and was impossible to win politically. It was such an absurd decision that the only explanation can only be found in a “philosophical” indifference to the consequences.
It is worth noting that in recent decades, no other American president, until Trump, has ventured into n armed conflict with Iran (and, by the way, previous Washington administrations were not adverse to the idea of military incursions).
But the fact is that Donald Trump has opened a whole new horizon for Republicans, infinitely more unfavorable for them, from an electoral point of view, since February 28, when he ordered the first strikes on Iran.
By exposing his deep contempt for the most pressing concerns of ordinary Americans (fuel prices) and Republicans (the election), Donald Trump is about to set off devastating chain reactions – in the MAGA universe and in the party.
At this point, all the Democrats need to do like China has been doing since January 20, 2025, when Donald Trump took office is not to interrupt him as long as he is wrong.
There is no more effective electoral agent for his Democratic rivals than a Donald Trump who is out of control in such a way. Just as there is no more effective way to undermine the U.S.’s global standing than an ignorant Donald Trump who lacks self-control.
- PS: Of course, Donald Trump’s increasingly eccentric stances on the subject of the war in Iran are a flagrant sign of the degeneration of his political sense and the loss of relevance of his intellectual capacity – both of which are somehow understandable, from the perspective of his notorious incompetence and advancing age.
- But we must not omit the key factor that accelerates and accentuates the Trumpist delirium: the irreversible bogging down of the White House in this war and the objective lack of solutions for a decent way out of this situation.
- Iran is the political graveyard of Donald Trump and, inevitably, of today’s Vietnam of a Republican Party that surrendered to the god MAGA without a fight.
