Ex-presidential candidate Calin Georgescu who was reportedly helped by Russia to improbably win the first round of a November presidential election flew out of Romania on Thursday, a day ahead of a protest he called over the annulled elections.
He was photographed at the Henri Coandă Airport departures in Bucharest, bound for Frankfurt, together with his bodyguard Marin Burcea, Hotnews reported.
The timing of his departure raised questions as Mr. Georgescu has called on his supporters to rally in support of him at an appeal against the elections which were canceled on Dec. 6 and he was expected to be there.
The former soil scientist said he was traveling abroad to submit appeals to unspecified European institutions over the elections which were canceled over Russian interference. He suggested that he may not attend the rally he organized in Bucharest.
An eyewitness sent a photo to Hotnews showing the former presidential candidate dressed in an elegant gray jacket, accompanied by his bodyguard.

In a second photo, Georgescu and the man with him are seen near the boarding gate for the flight to Frankfurt. The flight is scheduled to take off at 14:43.
He announced that he is leaving the country to take “legal steps to the European institutions”
Georgescu posted a message on social media Thursday announcing : “The vote that is our right that has been violated! Tomorrow, a Great Legal Union of lawyers will also become a Great Romanian Hour, because … we are all closely linked by the same ideal – freedom! Today, I will take our ‘hora’ (traditional Romanian folk dance) to the heart of Europe, to the highest courts.”
“Each of us is doing our part in this historic mission to defend our democracy. “
HotNews.ro said they had failed to find out which court he was headed to.
