EXCLUSIVE | Storm brews over Oktoberfest in Romania. Munich city hall denies granting permission, considers legal action

For 15 years, Oktoberfest has been one of the most popular autumn festivals in the Transylvanian city of Brasov, but this year it appears the beer may be warm and flat_ and the license granted to it was obtained under false pretenses.

Munich city hall has denied it granted a license to the organizers of this year’s Oktoberfest, in Romania, and say they intend to take legal action, Universul.net has learned.

This year’s Oktoberfest “has not been agreed with us and we would never agree to such a thing,” said Benedikt Brandmeier, director of the events and tourism department in Munich city hall in an email obtained by Universul.net.

He added that Munich city hall would take the matter to lawyers if it could not be settled otherwise.

However, Romanian organizers insisted that the event was “the first official Oktoberfest in Romania, organized in partnership with Munich.”

The Oktoberfest 2025 poster bears the logo of Munich city hall in the bottom right (see main photo), an apparent affirmation that Munich granted permission for its name and logo to be used.

Organizers of Oktoberfest Brasov 2025, Laminor Arena Expo Events SRL, reportedly told the Brasov city hall they had the required permission from Munich city hall to stage the Sept. 18-Oct. 5 event, and on that basis were granted the necessary permits.

Brasov.net reported that a copy of the official „Oktoberfest” license issued by the Munich city hall was filed with the Brasov city hall.

The festival has been held in Brasov, a popular tourist destination in central Romania since 2011.

Brasov known as Kronstadt which has a local German-speaking population has always hosted the Romanian edition of the festival.
