More than one million Ukrainians have entered Romania since Russia launched its invasion of the country three months ago.

Romania’s border police said 1,003,246 Ukrainian nationals had crossed the border between Feb. 24 when the war began and May 22.

Startling new figures from the UN show the war in Ukraine has displaced more than eight million people internally with more than 6.4 million refugees fleeing Ukraine since the start of the war.

They have crossed into neighboring countries in the region including Poland, Romania Hungary and Moldova.

Most Ukrainians that entered Romania have traveled on to third countries and others have returned home even with hostilities continuing.

Romania has seen the second largest number of Ukrainians refugees after Poland.

At the end of April, there were about 85,000 still in the country according to the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

“The international response to people fleeing war in Ukraine has been overwhelmingly positive,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi said. “Compassion is alive and we need a similar mobilization for all crises around the world.

Poland has welcomed  the most Ukrainians almost 3.5 million evacuees.

Most of the refugees are women and children as men of conscript age are banned from leaving. They  are staying in the capital and cities such as Constanta, Iasi, Brasov, Galati and Suceava.
