Romania’s president need not worry too much about his notoriety.
Along with Labubu dolls, the ‘Yellow Tie’ move about late Romanian musician Sergiu Celibidache and the Vienna Chistmas market, Nicusor Dan was the top Google search in Romania this year.
Other favorites were presidential runner-up George Simion, the movie “Nosferatu”, a recipe for lamb meatloaf (an Easter specialty), the Cerin diet, written by Romanian cardiologist Dr. Gheorghe Cerin.
As for questions: “What does a voting slip look like?” was top. Hardly surprising as Romania cancelled its presidential elections, held parliamentary elections, held fresh presidential elections and is holding elections for the mayor of Bucharest on Dec. 7 all in the space of a year (and a few days).
The results were released Thursday after Google presented the most popular (trending) searches of Romanians in 2025, including people, movies, series, recipes or questions they asked.
The results measured traffic figures from addresses in Romania, which searched on google.com, personal computer or mobile.
The presidential elections in the spring had a major impact on Romanians’ searches in 2025. Nicuşor Dan, who won the presidential race and also his opponent, George Simion, as well as the voter turnout for the tightly contested May 17 final are in the top 10 of Romanians’ Google searches in 2025.
The death of Ion Iliescu, the three-time president of Romania and an important political figure of the post-communist decades, and the death of Pope Francis or the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a media personality and conservative political activist in the United States, also triggered high interest on Google.
Other key moment were the match between FSCB and PAOK Thessaloniki, the Love Island show or the launch of the latest iPhone.
Labubu, a trendy doll which is ‘kind of ugly, but huggable,’ according to the New York Magazine, also generated searches as did the movie, Nosferatu. The only Romanian film in this year’s top 10 is “The Yellow Tie”, in 3rd place. As for TV series, “Squid Game” was the most popular in Romanians’ searches on Google.
Among the most popular Christmas market searches were Vienna and Budapest, with Bucharest and Craiova trailing lower down the list.
Among the most popular food and festive searches were lamb meatloaf, roast lamb and Easter.
“How is the Pope elected?” or “How did the diaspora vote” were popular questions for Romanians on Google, as well as fascination with the Labubu doll. In terms of ‘Ideas: Romanians looked for “ideas for men’s tattoos”, for “soup” or even “business ideas in the countryside”. Education in the field of artificial intelligence was among Romanians’ concerns in 2025: there was a high interest in Google searches for the “artificial intelligence Olympiad” and “artificial intelligence course”.
