Romania’s President Nicușor Dan on Friday expressed solidarity with Denmark in the Greenland crisis, but said that Bucharest considers the U.S to be its main security pillar.

“For Romania, the United States of America is an essential strategic partner for the country’s security and we are acting accordingly,” Dan said Friday, after the informal European Council in Brussels.

He said many EU countries shared his position. ”Obviously, there has been turbulence or discontinuities in this transatlantic relationship lately,” he said referring to US President Donald’s Trump’s statements that the US needed to ‘acquire’ Greenland.

“However, there are enough reasons for (the transatlantic relationship) to continue and of course, as I have said several times, dialogue is extremely important,” he continued.

The Romanian leader said that Romania stands in solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, under the terms of the European Union treaty.

“It’s better to return to dialogue,” he added.

“What I tried to do, because there was obvious emotion at that moment, was.. that I tried to anticipate what might happen if each of the parties of this alliance escalates and to say that it is better to return to dialogue,” he said.

“Fortunately, the following days proved me right, and dialogue returned and at this moment we can talk about a constructive approach from all sides,” the president said.

Before the European Council meeting, President  Dan said that the transatlantic relationship has returned “to normal parameters” after the talks on Greenland between Trump and NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte.
