Romania refuses to bite Russian accusations

Asked on Monday if Romanian authorities have an answer for the spokesperson of the Russian ministry of foreign affairs, Maria Zakharova, regarding the criticism brought to Romania for its support offered to Ukraine, PM Nicolae Ciuca answered that the government has a duty towards its citizens and the economy of the country.

„As for the criticism of others, I want to say this: We have a duty as much as possible assumed from the Romanian citizen – and you have seen how beautifully and well the citizens of Romania reacted when the conflict started in Ukraine – at this moment for all of us the most important thing is to continue to we maintain this empathy and the spirit of solidarity, and I am convinced that everything we do from now on through the measures we take to protect citizens, The economy to be protected and to have all the measures taken to ensure the security and safety side of the citizen, is what I think can matter more than a voice or another that criticizes us today”, Ciuca stated, quoted by news.ro.

The spokesperson of the Russian ministry of foreign affairs, Maria Zakharova launched an attack at Romania, last week, stating, among others that „Romanian authorities feel a moral discomfort connected to meeting the NATO directives to send more lethal transports, when they realize the real consequences of this policy ideologically motivated”.

She said that Romania sends weapons to „Ukrainian nationalists”, suggest increase in collateral damage, and asked the authorities from Bucharest to „share information” about the transport of weapons which Romania sends to the neighbouring country.

The Romanian ministery of defence (MApN) shows that they did not announce any discussion between the two ministries, even less „a package of military aid” for Ukraine, as it is not clear what Maria Zakharova meant by her statement. Similarly, the officials in Bucharest mentioned repeatedly that Romania’s position is not to reveal the military aid sent to Ukraine.

Recently, MApN announced in a press release posted on the site of the ministry that Vasile Dîncu met on last Wednesday in Bucharest with the deputy minister of defence from Kiev, Denys Sharapov, but the press release published does not refer to the supply of arms to Ukraine. It is reportedly possible that Zakharova made a confustion between the two officials from Kiev.
