Romania reports more than 200 new Covid-19 cases for second day in a row

Romania on Friday confirmed more than 200 new cases of the novel coronavirus for the second consecutive day.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 222 confirmed infections in the last 24 hours, fewer than Thursday when there were 237 new cases.

The number of cases has risen in the last three day, after a drop at the beginning of the week.

The new figures come as authorities decide whether to extend the state of alert to contain the spread of the virus.

President Klaus Iohannis and the minority Liberal government want to extend the restrictions on people’s movements and public gatherings, and at the same time relax some measures.

But the opposition Social Democrats and their allies say there is no justification for the extension which will be decided before June 15.

Romania now has a total of 21,404 cases of Covid-19 and 1,380 deaths.

Eleven patients succumbed to the virus in the last day.

Some 15,445 patients have recovered from the disease.

There are 171 patients being treated in intensive care, more than Thursday.

There are 2,030 people in institutionalized quarantine, and 101,400 in self-isolation at home.

About 11,000 tests were carried out in the last day, bringing the total of tests to 542,650 tests.
