Romanian Ambassador to Russia Cristian Istrate laid flowers in Moscow for Alexei Navalny at a monument to victims of political repression.

„Our thoughts are with his family and all the people of Russia who yearn for democracy, freedom and dignity,” reads the message posted on the Foreign Ministry’s site.

„On instructions from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Romania’s ambassador to Moscow laid flowers at the Solovetsky Stone to pay tribute to the unexpected and shocking death of Alexei Navalny, “ read a post on page X, formerly of the Foreign Ministry.

On February 16, Alexei, the number one opponent of Vadimir Putin, died at the age of 47 in an Arctic prison where he was serving 19 years. He had been incarcerated since returning to Russia in early 2021 and his health has deteriorated in recent months.

According to the Russian prison services (FSIN), Alexei Navalny died on Friday after suddenly falling ill „following a walk”.

Putin has made no statement about Navalny’s death a month before Russia’s presidential election, which expects to see him remain in the Kremlin for another six years.

Navalny’s body will be handed over to his family only after an examination lasting at least 14 days, people close to him said, citing what they learned from Russian investigators.

His wife, Yulia, announced that, despite being heartbroken, she would continue the fight against Putin’s regime. Her appeal was not broadcast in Russia’s state-controlled media,  AFP and Reuters reported.

Yulia Navalnaya’s twitter account briefly suspended after statements
