Talks underway for opening a Romanian Embassy in Riga

Riga

During a meeting on Monday in Bucharest with Speaker of the Latvian Saeima (Parliament) Edvards Smiltens and Latvian MPs, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca emphasized the ongoing steps for the opening as soon as possible of the Romanian embassy in Riga, as an important factor for boosting the bilateral relationship, the government said in a release.

Apparently, there is only an Honorary Consulate in Riga at the moment.

Both sides expressed appreciation for the quality of the Romanian-Latvian cooperation within the EU, NATO and formats such as the Three Seas Initiative and B9. The talks came in light of Russia’s invasion in Ukrainian and the continuous need for European cooperation.

Saeima Speaker Smiltens expressed gratitude Romania’s contribution to the security of NATO’s eastern flank, including by the participation in enhanced Air Policing missions intended for all three Baltic countries.

„The importance of ensuring political and financial support for strengthening the resilience of the Republic of Moldova was emphasized”, the release further states.

During talks, Prime Minister Ciuca also expressed thanks for Latvia’s constant support for the completion of Romania’s Schengen entry process.
