Border guards and customs officials at Bucharest’s Henri Coandă Airport have seized two kilograms of gold jewelry, luxury watches and money and are investigating two women on smuggling charges.

Two women, both Romanian citizens, aged 20 and 49, tried to enter the country on Friday afternoon from a flight from Dubai. After completing border formalities, the pair tried to pass customs without declaring the goods and money to authorities.

Border officials and customs officials were suspicious about the pair and examined their luggage where they discovered 19 necklaces, 34 bracelets, five rings and 17 earrings that appeared to be made of gold. They also found five luxury watches, 73,400 euros and 2,718,500 United Arab Emirates dirham which the women did not declare.

In total, the goods and the money had an estimated value of 3 million euros. Customs authorities have sent the goods for evaluation.

The two are facing criminal charges and could face a prison sentence of between 2-7 years under a 2006 law.
