Bucharest historically is known for fine music and classical music concerts and September is a special month thanks to the George Enescu festival.
But it’s not the only place in the Romanian capital where you will find quality classic music this month.
This Saturday, the Church of the Resurrection opens the third season of the Arts at the Anglican series opens with L’eclat D’Air, an innovative concert of baroque and early music performed on panflute and recorder by Mariana Preda and Juho Myllylä.
The program at the historic Anglican church near the Gradina Icoanei park, spans three centuries, and includes unique interpretations of pieces by composers such as Johann Walter, Georg Philipp Telemann, and, perhaps most interestingly, the turn of the 18th century Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, the church said in a statement sent to Universul,net.
Mariana Preda and Juho Myllylä are an international duo who explore the expressive potential of panflute and recorder in what promises to be a memorable concert at the century-old church known for its good accoustics.
Mariana Preda is a Romanian panflute player based in Amsterdam, known for her refined classical training and versatile performance style. She’s a graduate of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in classical/contemporary panflute, and has performed internationally at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Romanian Atheneum in Bucharest, and Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.
She has also performed at other festivals such as Untold, Grachtenfestival, and Gaudeamus. Her work blends classical, contemporary, and folk influences, and she is committed to expanding the panflute’s role in the modern concert repertoire.
Juho Myllylä is a Finnish recorder player and interdisciplinary musician whose artistry bridges early music and contemporary experimentation. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in recorder from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and performs regularly across Europe with ensembles such as The Royal Wind Music and Ensemble Gamut!.
Juho is a prizewinner of the Nordic & Baltic EAR-ly competition and the International Van Wassenaer Competition, and is also active as a composer, guitarist, and electronic music creator, continuously exploring new sound worlds across genres.
The Arts at the Anglican series at the red-brick Church of the Resurrection, a stone’s throw from Bulevardul Magheru, was founded by volunteers in 2023 to foster music and art in Bucharest, provide audiences with a chance to experience events in the church’s historic building, and help support the upkeep of the historic monument and community.
Tickets for this week’s concert cost 100 RON and can be reserved online (https://forms.gle/zmaXiXeXQpLa8hUb8) or purchased at the door, organizers said. Doors open at 6:30pm.
