Romania reached a total of almost 7,000 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with 246 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

The Strategic Communication Group said 6,879 people had been sickened by the virus and 346 people had died. Some 50 Romanian citizens have succumbed to the virus abroad.

The new figures came as President Klaus Iohannis extended the state of emergency for another month, warning Romanians that “the danger has not passed,” and a lockdown needed to remain in place until mid-May.

Authorities said Tuesday that 1,051 patients have recovered since the outbreak and some 241 patients are currently receiving treatment in intensive care units.

Just over 70,000 tests have been carried out across the country.

There are some 23,645 people placed in institutionalized quarantine, while anther 67,268 people are in self-isolation at home.

Romania will receive 100,000 hazmat suits this week from South Korea, which will be distributed to health workers and other workers on the front line.
