Israel has launched unprecedented strikes on Iran early Friday, targeting its nuclear program and military leaders, killing at least two of the top brass.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes will continue for many days. Israel’s military says it deployed 200 fighter jets and Iran launched over 100 drones toward Israeli territory in retaliation, Israel’s military said.
Military leaders killed
The attack killed Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s highest-ranking military officer. General Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was also killed in the strikes. He was one of the country’s most powerful figures.
Nuclear targets
Netanyahu said the “Operation Rising Lion” hit Israel’s main enrichment facility, calling it “the heart of Iran’s ballistic missiles program.” Six nuclear scientists were killed, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported.
US position
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there was no US involvement or assistance in the strikes and before the attack, President Donald Trump said he didn’t want Israel to target Iran as US negotiations on a nuclear deal continue.
