British Ambassador, H.E. Giles Portman and his wife Lucie Portman with the support of the British Embassy, hosted the launch of Life@Teki at the Techirghiol Balneary and Recovery Sanatorium – an important step in modernizing pediatric rehabilitation services in Romania.

Led by Fundatia Scheherazade and its president and founder, Wajiha Haris, together with Romania’s Health Ministry, the project will equip the center with modern technology, including an open MRI for children, and improve facilities to offer better treatment and better recovery outcomes.

The highlight of the launch _ a splash of glamour and a moment for quiet reflection on Romania’s sick children_ was a fashion show, featuring models showcasing the Pinko and Gerard Darel collections.

Special guest Doina Levintza, the undisputed 86-year-old doyenne of Romanian fashion, was greeted by applause as she appeared on stage at the end of the fashion extravaganza.

Ambassador Portman hosted almost 300 guests at the event held in a marquee at the British Ambassador’s residence garden.

Mrs. Haris set the tone for the evening elegance, dressed in a pale pink floor-length lace gown with a ribbon belt accessorized with bold diamond earrings, while Mrs. Portman, who promotes Romanian fashion brands, dazzled in a halter-neck geometric black and white pencil dress and chic updo.

Guests included people from the public, private and diplomatic sectors who turned out for the event, that was both serious and fun, on a chilly evening on the last day of March. A silent auction was held on the sidelines of the event to raise funds for the venture.

It is the only kind in Romania and the only center in Europe providing recovery for children undergoing cancer treatment.

The effort highlights the importance of international cooperation in healthcare and the vital role of partnerships between government, civil society and responsible businesses in improving children’s access to specialized recovery services.

Techirghiol Lake, separated from the Black Sea by a narrow strip of land, opened as a sanatorium in 1899. It is known for the therapeutic quality of its rich saltwater and mud, which can boost the immune system, increasing resistance to disease and promoting overall wellness.
