Romania battens down the hatches for coldest night of the winter

Romania has been gripped by a cold spell in recent days with the iciest night this winter expected overnight.

Meteorologists are forecasting temperatures between -20C and -10C. In the capital, hit by snow in recent days, temperatures plunged to -14C overnight with a slight respite during the day although it will remain well subzero.

Weather forecasters say the cold snap will continue throughout the winter after a decade of much warner weather during the winter months.

There was even colder weather outside the capital. The temperatures dropped to -22 C overnight at Omu peak, said Elena Mateescu, the director of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM).

“The the coldest night of this season so far will be the night from Monday to Tuesday, with the probability of minimums between minus 20 and minus 10 degrees. In Bucharest too, minus 14 – minus 15 degrees will be recorded, especially just outside the city, Elena Mateescu told Digi 24.

There will be heavy snow in mountainous areas, especially in north and central Romania, where up to seven centimeters of snow is expected, with winds of 70-80 km/h, she said.

From Thursday, temperatures increase slightly with highs  of up to 7-8 degrees C and low of -7 C.

“We must not exclude that after particularly cold snap, we can still expect freezing weather,” she added.
