Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan on Wednesday won the backing of a Romanian opposition party for the upcoming presidential election, a move designed to increase the country’s chances of remaining in the Western orbit.
Nationalist George Simion is heading the polls, but won’t necessarily win an expected runoff against Dan.

The Save Romania Union opposition group said it had decided to endorse Dan, an independent, over its own leader, Elena Lasconi, deputy party leader Dominic Fritz told reporters on Wednesday.

Lasconi, a centrist mayor, who has been polling in single digits said she would continue to run for president and slammed the move.
„I definitely won’t withdraw and am more determined than ever. I realize how rotten the system is,” she said.

Romania is holding new presidential elections on May 4 and 18 after the the previous ballot was canceled over fears of Russian interference.
